likelihood ratio source detection is working based on the psf and background model of the telescopes.
It compares likelihood of the data for two models -- empty sky and sky with a source.
The empty sky should produce well understandable distribution of measurements, which allows to obtain roughy constant rate of false sources with varying sensitivity, thus maximizing the ratio of detected and false sources.
